Return to School Update July 30, 2020

The communication below was emailed to staff and parents today:

July 30, 2020

Dear P-H-M Families,

We have been communicating regularly with medical professionals at the St. Joseph County Department of Health (SJCDH) and receiving guidance regarding the status of coronavirus activity and community transmission in making decisions regarding the safest model for curriculum delivery. The current thresholds for consideration by SJCDH strongly recommend that St. Joseph County Schools open in a virtual learning environment.

One Book, One School: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

If you haven’t seen or heard by now, our school’s “One Book, One School” this year is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Discovery staff are really pulling out all the stops to get students excited and engaged throughout the month. Click to see the monthlong overview of what’s planned.

On Friday, May 21, Discovery staff dressed in the different houses of Harry Potter.

"SWAG" Students Help Judge Horizon Science Fair

Some of our eighth grade students from S.W.A.G. (Students With A Goal) spent some time at Horizon Elementary this morning (Thursday, Jan. 23) talking with some “scientists!”

Though Horizon’s Science Fair has been going on for many years, this is the first time our students have gone over to help judge. This is a great initiative to help our students put their critical thinking skills to the test, while also helping Horizon students practice presenting information about their experiments.

Breakout Boxes Challenge Students

Critical thinking and teamwork were on full display today as Social Studies teachers Mr. James Howard and Mr. Tanner Givens introduced the joy and frustrations of “Breakout Boxes” to their 7th grade classes.

Breakout EDU boxes are immersive games in which students must figure out academic related clues that will allow them to decode a series of locked boxes.

The clues can be customized to any subject and to multiple grade levels to allow for a unique game play experience each and every time.
