Parenting Teenagers in the 21st Century

Eric Tamashasky became the Legal Advisor for the St. Joseph County Police Department in April of 2011.  As part of that role, he is deputized as a law enforcement officer where he focuses on cybercrimes against children with the Sheriff Mike Grzegorek’s Cybercrimes Against Children Unit. He will be speaking about teens and internet usage and social media.

Tony Garascia is the Clinical Director of the Samaritan Counseling Center, in South Bend, Indiana. He works with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents. His areas of specialty includes family difficulties, depression and anxiety and sexual identity issues, which many teenagers are dealing with today.

Bus Tracking

The GPS bus tracking system (powered by Synovia) has been well received since its introduction in the fall. Smart phones can now be used to set up an account and for tracking our PHM buses. You can register for this service by creating an account at

P-H-M High Ability

In accordance with the Indiana high ability law, we are required to have an identification process in place to identify students of high ability in the general intellectual and specific academic domains. We identify students who have high ability in language arts and/or math.

Every kindergartener, second and fifth grader who has not been previously identified in a subject area is considered for high ability identification.

Testing for the high ability identification process will begin in December.

Discovery named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2013

Discovery Middle School is one of 286 schools recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School. "Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,' said Secretary Duncan. The National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in student achievement.

Discovery rated an A by the Indiana Department of Education

Discovery Middle School has received an A by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). This grade reflects Discovery's most recent academic performance. Letter grades are calculated based on data collected throughout each school year and takes into account a variety of factors including student performance and student growth.
