Discovery Principal Sheryll HarperDiscovery Middle School is an Indiana Four Star School and a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School. Discovery serves students in grades 6-8 and has always been an innovative, collaborative learning community where the student’s voice is valued. Students are taught to combine strong evidence with a passion to argue their viewpoint. Students demonstrate understanding using contextual vocabulary in discussions with their peers and in writing assignments. The emphasis is on depth of knowledge and problem solving.
 

Teachers collaborate to implement literacy standards that stretch student performance. Exemplary student work is displayed and celebrated and the school has a culture of high expectations. An annual One Book, One School event celebrates literacy and brings students, teachers and parents together in activities that create a community of learners. A thirty-minute READ time each morning gets everyone focused and ready to go for the day!
 

A diverse student population is welcome at Discovery with students speaking 23 different languages. The focus is on preparing students to be successful citizens of a global society. We exchange with several middle schools in Anshan, China, traveling there and hosting our Chinese partners at our school. Additionally, students and teachers travel together on educational excursions in Europe every other year.

Building a safe, caring environment supports student success and Discovery was among the first to implement a comprehensive research-based anti-bullying program. The result is a student-centered culture that allows every student to excel to his or her full potential.

 

Discovery Middle School Mission and Vision

It is the mission of Discovery Middle School staff, students, parents and community to ensure all students show continuous growth in academics, social, emotional and physical areas. This is accomplished through a partnership with parents to create a safe, focused and interactive learning environment rich in content, creativity and experiences where students have ownership and maximize their learning.  Growth will be measured with respect to school, state and district standards through surveys, observations and testing, and other strategies. Support and resources are provided so that all students are responsible, contributing citizens.
