Honors Science and Social Studies
Our Honors Science and Social Studies classes were a new addition to the Discovery curriculum this school year. Both have a high standard for student participation. Students are expected to participate in intellectual dialogue, critical thinking, reading and writing, collaborative and independent inquiry as well as teaching others. Applications are required for these courses and can be found here.
Early Summer School Pick Up
Early Summer School starts today from 4:10 – 5:30! Parents of car riders should pick up their students at Door A off Ash Road. Parents must pull all the way forward along the sidewalk in front of the school. Thanks for your cooperation!

Details on Middle School 2018 Summer Europe Trip

The first parent meetings for the P-H-M 2018 Summer Europe Trip for middle school students was held Friday, March 3.
The 10-day-trip will take place June 25, 2018. Students will visit historic sites in Germany, Italy & Switzerland.
This educational opportunity is only for current 7th and 8th graders and will be guided by the trusted company EF Tours.

Ski Club Update
Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures this winter, Discovery Ski Club only attended three out of the seven scheduled trips for this season. Therefore, a transportation refund of $31.44 will be mailed to all Ski Club members soon.
The refund is calculated as follows:
Transportation Fee $55.00
Price per trip $7.86
Four trips @ $7.86 = $31.44

Please be sure to keep your 2016/2017 Swiss Valley Club Card.

You may use your club card for a free visit to Swiss Valley next season (any day, any time). Rental is included if you purchased a rental package.

The deadline to use this free visit is January 10th, 2018.

Also, you can use your club card at Caberfae Peaks in Cadillac, Michigan and receive half off for a full day ticket price.

Shanty Creek Resorts (in Bellaire, Michigan) are offering 50% off Supertickets from Wednesday to Friday.

They will also honor your Swiss Valley Club Cards as Season Passes for the remainder of this ski season.

PLTW Spring 2017 Dates Changed
Mr. Braunsdorf will be out of town for a PLTW conference in Indianapolis on Monday March 13 and Tuesday March 14. Therefore, there will be no class those two days. In order to give students the most of this Design and Modeling experience, he will extend the end date from March 16 to March 20.
NO CLASS March 13 and 14 (Monday and Tuesday)
LAST DAY = March 20 (Monday)

5th Grade Orientation Dates
Discovery principals and 6th grade ambassadors will visit each elementary school to present information to 5th grade students. Each corresponding evening each elementary will host an evening meeting so that Discovery principals can share more information and answer parents’ questions.

February 21 – Mary Frank Elementary – 7:00 P.M.
February 23 – Northpoint Elementary – 7:00 P.M.
Instrument Selection Nights are February 27th and 28th from 4:30 – 8:00 pm at Discovery. Your 6th grade Music Selection Form is due to the main office at DMS by MONDAY, MARCH 13TH. Download the form here if you still need one.

Wednesday, April 19 Parent/Student Orientation at Discovery 6:30 – 7:30 P.M. Students will tour the building with their parents and share what they have learned during their past visit.
Exceptional Education 5th Grade Parent and Student Meetings: These are opportunities for parents and their child with an IEP to meet teachers of special education, take a brief tour of their learning areas, and ask questions. Meet in the library.

At Penn-Harris-Madison, we are proud to offer year-round academic enrichment, athletic and recreational activities for the students and families within our award winning school district.
For months, P-H-M administrators, teachers, coaches and staff have been busy planning all the camps and activities that will be available for students when school lets out this year on Wed., June 7, 2017.
Everything from Japanese to building apps for mobile devices to baseball will be offered this summer! And we’re adding more and more …

Registration open for Penn Volleyball Clinic
Registration is currently underway for Penn High School’s Volleyball Spring Clinic 2017 for any students currently in grades 6-through-8.
The Clinic will be on Saturdays (Feb. 18, Feb. 25, March 4, March 18 and March 25) from 4-7 p.m. at the Penn High School Arena.
The cost is $100 for five sessions, and $60 for three sessions.
Penn Volleyball Head Coach Sarah Hendricks, who coached the Kingsmen to a state title, and was also a state champion as a high school player, will lead the Clinic.

Indiana Stock Market Competition
For the fourth year in a row Discovery’s team won 1st place in the Indiana Stock Market Competition; another Discovery team took 3rd. The competition is sponsored by the Indiana Council for Economic Education to encourage study of the stock market and investment decision making.
