Yearbook Club 2018-2019

The yearbook staff comes together for a common purpose: to create the yearbook students want to read! It takes a lot of planning and preparation to produce a fun yearbook that is full of creative ideas.

In order to be considered to be a member of the yearbook staff application part 1 and part 2 must be turned in to Mrs. Ward by 4:00 PM on Friday, August 31st– no exceptions.  Click Here for the application.

Please understand that the yearbook club is a COMMITMENT. You are expected to be responsible, on time, dependable, hard working, available to attend school sports and activities, and to meet before or after school to meet deadlines. It is a bonus to have a smartphone for taking pictures or a digital camera but it is not required. You will be required to have a flash drive for saving and sharing photos you take.

DMS Spell Bowl Information for 2018-2019

DMS Spell Bowl

Greetings!

Thank you for showing an interest in the defending State Champion DMS Spell Bowl Team. Spell Bowl is an exciting academic competition but has a relatively short season. This means that the most dedicated academic athletes are rewarded for their endeavors.

Spell Bowl pits multiple schools simultaneously against each other as they are given the same words to spell. Each team consists of 8 spellers who are given 9 words each. Students write the words down and are not asked to speak in front of an audience.  There are 1614 words that may be used in competition, so it is important for students to be familiar with as many words as possible.

Please use the attached word list to begin reviewing and practicing the words over the summer. Success is directly correlated to investment reviewing and practicing the words. This year, I am requesting that students hand write the odd numbered words over the summer in order to be considered for the team.  Download the word list here.

Once the school year begins, all interested spellers are invited to join as we meet in September to familiarize ourselves with the words and practice together. At the beginning of October, we will conduct practice tests (tryouts) to find the top spellers who will be members of the DMS Spell Bowl Team. As a team, we will practice together more regularly in October as we prepare for the Area Competition on October 30th. Depending on our performance in the Area Competition, we may be invited to the Spell Bowl State Finals on November 10th. You can find more details at the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Website (http://www.iasp.org/dsp/academic/spell/).

Spell Bowl is for students who are self-motivated to succeed and are dedicated to put the time into practicing the list of words. I am excited for a great season and hope you are too! Let’s defend our state title!

Best,

FLL Robotics State Competition

At the recent state FLL Robotics Competition, in Fort Wayne, 3 out of 44 teams, include students from Discovery.  Loads of fun was had by all, as they demonstrated what they have learned throughout the season. This year, teams focused their research on trying to solve a problem facing an animal, proposing unique solutions.

Teams include:

  • Flufflepuff (in pink) – 7 of their 9 team members from DMS.

  • Fuzzy Wuzzy Disaster Busters – 2 of their 5 members from DMS. (Adam Poellabauer and Wilson Shrout)

  • Shark Squad (in blue, Team 5573) is made up entirely of 10 DMS students, from 6th -8th grade.

Two of the teams earned awards.

  • Flufflepuff (1920) won the TOSS award (Team Outreach Service and Sharing and Champions Award) and the Grand Champions (won the tournament and will go on to the World Festival, again)!

  • Fuzzy Wuzzy Disaster Busters won the Robot Strategy award.

  • Team 5573 (Shark Squad) had some technical difficulties that held them back. The team is looking at possibly entering the spring invitational in Elkhart. They will lose 2 members next year (aging out), and are already thinking about ways that they can do better next year.
