June 2017

Dear Parents,

Students celebrated their last day of school Wednesday with award assemblies, signing yearbooks, and general classroom goodbyes.  This was another amazing year with Discovery receiving our twenty-first consecutive Indiana Four Star Award.  Students have remained competitive in athletics as well as academics, with a most recent group of 7th and 8th grade math students competing this summer in Orlando at the national TEAM Engineering Competition.

Our congratulations go out to Mrs. Lewis who is retiring this year as our ENL (English as a Next Language) teacher. Miss Kaitlin Dickman is transferring to the high school and she will be greatly missed as a 6th grade science teacher and volleyball coach.  Mr. Stephen Getz and Mr. Duke Lines have both resigned to take other positions in the area as well as Indianapolis.  Although we will miss these outstanding educators at our school, we wish them well and realize that our mission truly is always to “grow people!”  Teachers joining our staff include:  Miss Whitney Emeigh, a transfer from Grissom Middle School, who will fill our Media Specialist position in the library; and Miss Cori Tallman, a transfer from Schmucker Middle School as our ENL teacher;

The Discovery main office will be open from 7:00 – 12:00 and 12:30 – 3:30 until Friday, June 23.  We will reopen with these summer hours on August 7 and return to our 8:00 – 5:00 hours on Monday, August 21. If you have questions, though, at any time, please email me.

We will mail our students’ schedules the week before school starts. You and your child may come into the building and “walk” your schedule and prepare your locker any time after you receive your schedule. We will host an Open House for incoming sixth graders on Monday evening, August 21 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM.  Bring your schedule so you can experience a mini-six period journey through sixth grade.

The seventh and eighth grade Open House will be held on Monday, August 28 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM. Parents will follow their student’s schedule to meet teachers. At 7:45 PM that evening, eighth grade parents will be invited to the cafeteria to receive information about the Washington, D. C. trip. More complete information will be given this August and we hope you attend these meetings, as it is important for us to connect early in the year.

You will receive much information in a packet students will bring home the first day of school, Wednesday, August 23.  Please look for the Wellness curriculum notice. If you do NOT want your child to participate in our Growth and Development unit, you must notify your child’s wellness teacher who will initiate an independent assignment for your child.  This year the student handbook will be shared electronically as the agendas/planners are not on the fee

schedule. You must sign the paper form included in your first day packet, indicating that you have read this set of procedures and policies and discussed them with your child. We will also have student meetings where we review these procedures and school rules.

We will continue to implement our positive behavior plan for our students next year. The theme is AIM High which focuses on ATTITUDE, INTEGRITY, and MAKING A DIFFERENCE. This program embraces the anti-bullying expectations we already teach and have in place at Discovery. If you ever feel bullying behaviors are happening, you must call me or someone at school. Please continue to be vigilant in supervising your child’s internet access and their social networking activities.

All of our students will use Chromebooks next year. Sixth grade students will receive their Chromebooks with book check-out on Friday, August 25.  This year students will receive a textbook for each course that they will keep at home for reference.  During the school day, most times, students will access their learning material through Canvas on their Chromebook.  Eighth graders will receive their textbooks on Wednesday and seventh graders will receive theirs on Thursday.

Wishing you a relaxing and fun summer,

Mrs. Sheryll Harper, principal (

Mr. Troy Kauffman, assistant principal (
