February Newsletter

February 2018

Dear Parents,

This year is rolling into February already!  December saw our students and staff involved in this year’s THREE Books One School event.  Students chose one of our FINAL book selections:  Shift, Rot and Ruin, and Death Cloud.  Students and staff enjoyed the trivia, hallway detectives, scavenger hunts, and final Battle of the Books showdown!

I want to share a few upcoming things to put on your calendars:

Wednesday, February 7, 7:00 p.m., SMS Cafeteria, "Student Internet Safety." St. Joseph Co. Police Offc. Eric Tamashasky will present on what parents need to know and do to help keep their children safe online. This is open to all parents across the District and is presented by P-H-M's Forum. I will post a news web story in late December. For now you can communicate it as a "Save the Date" item.

Flyers of community events or activities are posted at this link on the District website, https://www.phmschools.org/community-events-activities. There is a homepage link off the 11 elementary websites directly to this page. Currently, it is listed in the drop down menu of the middle and Penn websites because of the Penn Showcase banner ad.

The January menus are available online at https://www.phmschools.org/school-menus.

Middle School Specific information:  The P-H-M Education Foundation is making available for the first time two (2), $2,000 travel grants which will be awarded to two (2) qualified P-H-M current 6th and 7th grade students for participation in the Spring 2019 Middle School China Cultural Exchange Program.  The next trip is planned for @March 27 – April 4, 2019. Final interviews will be held later this week for qualifying grant candidates.

At the end of February we will begin our orientation programs for incoming fifth graders at our feeder schools:  Horizon, Northpoint, and Mary Frank.  A complete calendar of events is posted elsewhere on our website.  This is a great opportunity to learning more about Discovery and help make the transition to middle school a smooth one!

We recently completed our Study Island Math and Language Arts formative testing.  These results help us make sure our students are prepared for the upcoming ISTEP testing which which begin on Monday, February 26 here at Discovery.  This year students will take ISTEP with their Chromebooks.  We will run a little different schedule to accommodate testing times and this will be posted on our website soon.

Please RSVP soon, if your child qualified for our Wednesday, February 7, Recognition Breakfast.  It will begin here in our cafeteria at 7:30 AM, with the awards presented around 8:00 AM.

Stay warm through February and stay in touch with us at Discovery!
